It's an old fashioned with Mezcal and Tequila, what’s not to love?
Possibly one of my favourite drinks to both make and mix, the Oaxacan Old Fashioned (OOF as I am now shortening it to for the purposes of this article) first came to my attention one quiet evening in work many moons ago, trawling through my copy of Death & Co.’s first book, and falling instantly in love with it. I haven't done much with it as it’s pretty much perfect as is, merely highlighted the sweetness slightly to balance the punchiness of the mezcal.
Keywords for this drink- short, punchy, smokey, slightly sweet, strong.
Ingredients
35ml Anejo tequila (1800 is my go-to)
35ml mezcal (Creyente)
10-15ml agave syrup
2 dashes a Angostura bitters
2 dashes orange bitters
Method
In a mixing glass, add your agave, spirits, then bitters. Give them a slow stir without ice to start, then fill with rocks ice and stir thoroughly. Strain into a loaded Double Old Fashioned (pour your OOF into a DOF 😂), ideally with large rocks, garnish with an orange or blood orange twist and a little black pepper. Enjoy!
